This map goes over the process of digitizing from starting with aerial imagery to making it 3D.The area being digitized is Phoenix Park located in Eau Claire, WI. Phoenix Park used to be a brown site for toxic waste but it was converted to a public park and now hosts numerous concerts, weddings, and other outdoor activities.

Chippewa Valley December 1st, 2014
This is a map of landsat 8 OLI imagery and surface temperature. The band combination for the imagery is 7,5,3 and the thermal band used is band 11. I chose band 11 because of the amount of contrast in temperature across the study area. I created a model to convert the band 11 data to degrees Fahrenheit. A copy of the model is available for download with the link below (along with a band 10 model).

The Geography of Blugold Marching Band Applicants
This project displays where applicants hometowns are who are applying for the Blugold Marching Band (BMB) at the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire. I intentionally included a small amount of text so that the maps could speak for themselves. There are four maps that show the instruments in the band and three which are showing some form of analysis. I expanded upon this project for my capstone research with the study question of: From where and why do students apply for the Blugold Marching Band.

Chippewa Valley, WI
These two maps are of the same area within Wisconsin but of different dates and one includes an elevation effect. The technique I used to create this effect is different from other methods but I see no visual differences between my maps and others. ArcGIS has a tutorial for how to perform this merging of a hillshade raster and an image but I wasn't able to get it to work. If you want to try it you can do so here.
I started with a DEM of the Chippewa Valley and created a Hillshade DEM within ArcMap. Next I brought in a pansharpened image and changed the transparency to 25%. I used photoshop to greatly increase the contrast and after doing so the final image with the hillshade worked exactly how I wanted it to. Below I've included the map without the hillshaded raster to show the difference this method made in the map.

February 2014 Wisconsin
Wisconsin got extremely lucky this year with the weather in terms of satellite imagery but if you lived in Wisconsin this past February you know that it was one of the coldest months in recorded history for the state. Shown on the poster are two images, one of Wisconsin shown in the visible spectrum and the other using infrared information. By using infrared data we can bring out different features within an image. The most noticeable change is that now clouds stick out much better so it is easier to tell what is snow and what is a cloud.

2013 Drum Corps International
Below is a map which was requested from a friend who marched with the Madison Scouts in 2012 and 2013. For more information about Drum Corps International visit DCI.org
Poster text: World class drum corps perform across the nation under the jurisdiction of Drum Corps International (DCI). Practicing many hours a day and performing in hot temperatures can take a large toll on the members of each corps. Average temperature from each city on the day of the performance has been interpolated to show where it was warm or cool over the course of the tour schedule. Graduated points show how many drum corps were at each performance location with San Antonio, TX, Atlanta, GA, and Allentown, PA hosting all 22 drum corps. All of the drum corps finished their seasons in Indianapolis, IN.

Cahokia: A Mound Society
This project was completed for a Geography 322: Natives Geographies offered at UWEC. We selected Cahokia because of how large of a civilization it was and because of the shear number of mounds constructed at the site. We provide a brief overview of the society and focus in on two mounds in particular; Monks Mound and Mound 72. To fully appreciate the poster in full detail make sure you download the full resolution size pdf.

Mounds and Moundgroups of Cahokia
This map was created for as part of a final project poster for Geography 322: Natives Geographies at UW Eau Claire. Aerial imagery was used to show where the mounds would be located in regards to present day developments. Cahokia is a Mississippian City which was once larger than London, England (in 1250 AD). The final poster for this research project will be uploaded once completed.

Spectral and Socioeconomic Assessment of Land Use/Land Cover Changes in Chippewa and Eau Claire Counties, WI
This is a research project which was presented at the annual ASPRS (American Society of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing) conference in Louisville, KY this past March (2014). This project was guided by Dr. Cyril Wilson from the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire. Socioeconomic data is from the Census and satellite imagery is from Landsat 5 TM. The poster below is the final version which was presented at CERCA at the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire.
Below is the powerpoint from the ASPRS conference and also the poster from Pecora 19 which was in Denver last November (2014).
Below is the presentation created for the ASPRS 2014 annual conference in Louisville, KY. The presentation was a 5 minute "lightning talk" which is why there are only a few slides.

Fluvial Analysis of the Chippewa River: Current and Speed
This was a project which was undertaken last September (2013). A partner and myself went floating (tubing) down the Chippewa River and carried with us a few GPS units to collect data. The purpose of doing this is explained within the image below. I would like to expand upon this study testing to see if different water heights change the speed or direction of the float.
You can see that on the Speed map there is a lack of data. This is because the speed data was collected using Anti Map and Anti Map only collects data when the screen of the phone is on and when no other applications are running. If the phone receives a text message, phone call, or other alert Anti Map will save the data it has collected and close out.

Chippewa Valley Land Cover Change
I created a video showing land cover change in the Chippewa Valley from 2000-2013. I used Landsat TM, MSS, and OLI images to create the video using false-color infrared composites for each of the images. The music was added to make it somewhat more interesting instead of just watching an image for a few seconds. The video was uploaded to YouTube for anyone to view and comment on.

Chippewa River, Eau Claire, Wi
The following map displays the depth of the Chippewa River as it flows from the North through the city of Eau Claire, WI. The Chippewa River used to be utilized for logging purposes but more recently has been re-purposed by the city's younger population as a popular destination for floating (tubing) during the warmer months.
The river is very calm during most of the year but there have been numerous drownings in the river and showing where the river is at it's deepest and shallowest will help not only the river faring population but also emergency response personnel who don't have radar available to them.
Note that these depths should be expected to be found while the river is calm with no recent rain or flooding.

I have labeled major features within the area the basemap covers starting the river map at Madison Street and ending at Clairemont Avenue. When floating down the river the most common starting spot is the confluence of the Chippewa and Eau Claire Rivers at Phoenix Park and ending at the boat launch at Hobbs Ice Arena. The contour lines mark every five feet in depth starting with five feet for the first line.
Note that these depths should be expected to be found while the river is calm with no recent rain or flooding.
