College Football National Champions

With the introduction of a playoff in collegiate football FBS the team who wins the national championship is now legitimate... or are they? Ever since 1869 when the first version of football was played between Rutgers and Princeton there has been controversy around who the national champion is leading many to state that a national championship in collegiate football D-1A/FBS is "mythical". The new College Football Playoff allows four teams to compete for a national championship but there will no doubt still be controversy around who gets to participate (TCU and Baylor were snubbed of participation in the playoff while Ohio State got selected and ended up winning the championship).

I have compiled maps showing the various ways schools have been selected as national champions in football ranging from the first games in 1869 to 2014.
